- Supreme Court of India has given direction to FSSAI to ban chewable tobacco and nicotine in all forms
- This strictly ban sale of gutkha and allied products
- Regulation 2.3.4. of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition & Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 states “Product not to contain any substance which may be injurious to health: Tobacco and nicotine shall not be used as ingredients in any food products.”
- Lack of enforcement of regulation is helping some tobacco companies to sell gutkha in twin packs which needs to be mixed before consumption rather than ready-to-consume mix
- Next hearing on the matter at Supreme Court will be in Nov.2016.
